Ontario's New Initiative To Make EV Charging More Accessible

In another step towards sustainable transportation, on February 16, 2024, the Ontario government announced a streamlining initiative to simplify EV charger regulations. This move aims to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles and shows Ontario's commitment to an electric future.

Learn how the Ontario government plans to reach their EV infrastructure goals:

  • Streamlined regulations for EV chargers
  • New financial incentives
  • Promotion of sustainable transport

Streamlined EV Charger Regulations

Ontario intends to streamline regulations to make it easier for businesses and investors to navigate the process of installing EV charger infrastructure for public, commercial propertiesmulti-unit residential buildings, and commercial fleets

In short, the new initiative will require Ontario’s 58 local utilities to align their processes for connecting new public EV charging stations, including the use of standardized forms, timelines, and information requirements. These new rules come into force on May 27, 2024.

This simplification in administrative hurdles is expected to encourage more EV charging stations to be built, strengthening confidence in Ontario’s EV charging networks and encouraging EV adoption.

How Does This Impact Existing Ontario Ev Charging Programs?

Ontario aims to be 100% emission-free by 2035 through the Electric Vehicle Availability Standard Program, and this new initiative complements existing funding and incentive programs for EV charging adoption:

  •  ZEVIP funding: Ontario EV charger rebates for commercial properties, condos/apartments and fleets through
  • EV ChargeON: a $91 million investment in rural public EV chargers (including at highway rest-stops)
  • The new Ultra-Low Overnight price plan, which allows customers who use more electricity at night, including those charging their EV, to save up to $90 per year by shifting demand to the ultra-low overnight rate period when province wide electricity demand is lower.

With these efforts Ontario hopes to become a leader in the transition to cleaner and more ethical modes of transportation.
