EV Charger Maintenance Guide

EV charging stations do not generally require a lot of maintenance, but there are things you can do to maximize your charger’s lifespan and maintain its safe and efficient operation.

Below we look at some key maintenance considerations for EV charging stations.

Regular Visual Inspection Of Your EV Charging Station

Perform routine visual checks of your EV charging station for any visible damage, wear, or signs of vandalism that may have to be addressed. Pay close attention to the EV charger’s cables, connectors, and the housing of the charging station.

Cable Inspection

Examine charging cables for signs of wear, fraying, or damage. Damaged cables will eventually impact charging efficiency and could create problems with usage monitoring and billing. Damaged cables should be replaced promptly to prevent safety hazards and proper operation of the EV charger.

Connector Checks

Ensure that the connectors are free from dirt and other debris. They should be clean, in good condition and able to make a secure connection with the vehicle's EV charging port. If you find evidence of rust or deterioration, address this immediately to avoid damage to your vehicle’s car’s EV charging port.

Cleaning and Debris Removal

Keep your EV charging station clean.  This is especially true if your charging stations are outside, but also if they are indoors – condo parking lots and garages can be very dusty.Regularly clean the station's cables, connectors and housing with a clean, soft, dry rag to remove any dirt, dust, and debris that accumulates over time.

Software Updates

If your EV charging station is in a building, it is likely connected to a WiFi network and software updates will happen automatically.

If you have a non-connected EV charging station, it will not receive upgrades.

Key Takeaways

There’s not much you have to do to ensure proper maintenance of your EV Charger, but a little care can go a long way. If you note issues with your EV charging station or its components during maintenance and inspection, you can reach out to a qualified EV charging installer for help.
